Dental Implants Effects of damaged or missing teeth. Teeth have a major role in your daily life. They affect your general health, appearance and self-esteem. Every tooth plays an important role.

The back teeth help you chew and grind food while working your muscles and joints. The front teeth help you cut your food, support your lips, and of course are an important part of your smile. Missing even a single tooth has a tremendous effect on the remaining teeth.

Lacking support, your other teeth will begin to shift and eventually collapse into the open space. These factors can make it difficult to replace the missing tooth and/or teeth. The greater the number of teeth missing in your mouth, the more challenging it becomes to replace them. What happens if you do nothing?

Choosing not to repair a damaged tooth, or failing to replace a missing tooth, can start a chain reaction of consequences. Eventually, your jaw bone will begin to shrink and the skin around your mouth will lose support, changing your facial structure and making you appear older. Missing a tooth may also result in avoiding certain foods that are difficult to bite and chew. What is a dental implant? A dental implant is considered to be the most successful method of tooth replacement used today. The first patient treated with dental implants was in 1965.

Since then, millions of implants have been placed successfully around the world. Implants are very durable, made out of titanium, and only a few millimetres long. This small screw is placed into your upper or lower jawbone, fuses with the bone, and becomes the foundation for the replacement tooth. Dental implants can be used to replace single or multiple missing teeth. With proper care and good oral hygiene, your implant will last many years, or even a lifetime.

What does getting a dental implant involves? The process of getting a dental implant(s) requires a number of visits over several months. CBCT scans and impressions are required to determine the bone structure, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant. Bone grafting may be necessary to increase bone structure and density.

The implant(s) will be surgically placed into the jaw bone and the healing process takes up to six months. Once the implant(s) has completely integrated, a custom crown, bridge, or denture will be made and attached to the implant(s). Good oral hygiene, eating habits, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of the dental implant.

Healthy remaining teeth. Dental implants do not rely on neighbouring teeth to provide support like alternative treatments such as a bridge or partial denture. By replacing the root structure of a missing tooth you are also replacing support for biting and chewing, which will lighten the load on your remaining natural teeth.
